Description |
This vessel is red on the exterior and black and white on the interior. The interior design consists of a band below the rim having two rows of wavy lines and a single wide line. Then the interior is filled with a symmetrical design fro which opposing sides are mirror images of each other. One side has opposed paint-filled and wavy line-filled triangles that are interlocking. The other side has two rectilinear scrolls that each terminate in opposed stepped, paint-filled motifs. Excessive wear occurs on the exterior base with little or none on the interior. This vessel apparently was not used at all or frequently. It may have functioned in rarely performed ceremony or perhaps its design contained special symbolism. Alternatively it may have been a grave offering made espeically for burial. The vessel has been reconstructed, but not restored. This is a fine example of gila polychrome. |
